#FormItFriday for the Griswolds

I watched one of my favorite Christmas movies this week – National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. I love the scene where Clark Griswold is holding his model pool. This always appeals to the Architect in me – A scale model! Imagine doing sun studies! What if Alvaro Siza designed the pool?!

Inspired by that scene – and it’s awesome to think of a summer pastime in the middle of winter – for #FormItFriday I designed a modern pool house for the Griswolds using FormIt Web.  Check out this image and the many other awesome FormIt works posted in our new Gallery!

FormIt at Autodesk University 2014 – a recap

Well, another Autodesk University has come and gone. The FormIt team had a wonderful time interacting with our users and attracting some new ones! Here were some of the highlights:

  1. We moderated a full-capacity panel discussion with three amazing speakers. It is always great to have passionate users tell the story of your product! The video has been posted and is available on the Autodesk University website.
  2. We launched an updated version of FormIt for iOS and FormIt for web that includes our revolutionary real-time collaboration system.
  3. We launched a re-design of our website, that includes a public gallery where you can  share images of your FormIt work and interact with other users! Go check it out and post some of your best images!
  4. We demoed. We demoed. and when our voices let out, we demoed some more (hey, who needs to talk, FormIt practically demos itself!)
  5. And most important of all, we met so many of our passionate users! You never fail to inspire us! We look forward to next year (that is, once we have had a year to recover!)

Design is a team sport – iOS version

In October, we announced our revolutionary real-time collaboration system for conceptual modeling on the web. Never satisfied, we are excited to announce today that we have just launched an update to FormIt for iOS that allows you to collaborate with your colleagues. Now you can do sessions with web-web, web-ipad, ipad-ipad and any other combination! Go over to the App Store, grab the updated version of FormIt and start collaborating!

Visualization in FormIt for Web

There are some pretty nice ways to look at and study your FormIt model. There is a suite of visual style settings that can be applied quickly to give your model some pizzazz. There is also a pre-populated list of materials that can be quickly applied to give your model some life and color. In this latest video, I demonstrate how to make your own materials out of images and colors, with or without transparency as well as how to edit materials. This is a very nice tool. Finally, for you solar study aficionados, there are some fast ways to study light, shadow, and if you have your site image imported, you can even look at how your shadows are falling on adjacent properties. I hope you enjoy this video tour of the visualization tools.

Model Editing in FormIt Web

Editing a model in FormIt for Web is super easy. The right-click menu pops up a radial selection of context sensitive functions that can be applied. In this video, I demonstrate how to use the typical tools like Move and Rotate. Array has gotten more robust with its ability to not only array shapes, but also edges and faces. Yes, edges and faces! And Scale has gotten an upgrade in its functionality with the ability to choose a base point from which to scale with handy new little grips and drag arrows. But what is really exciting are the new tools including Offset Face and Tilt Face, both super cool. Check out the video:

Design is a Team Sport

Design is a team sport! Are you ready to collaborate on your 3D conceptual models in real time? This is not vapor-ware. This is real. Come check out our latest update at http://beta.autodeskformit.com

To get started, make sure you are logged into Autodesk 360, click Start Sharing Session and email your colleagues the link. That is all there is to it! Once they log in, you will see them appear in the header next to the Collaboration button. Everyone is assigned a unique selection color so you can keep track of who is working on what. Use the chat window to enhance your collaboration session. As with all of FormIt, this is still in beta. Please give us a shout at our Support site to let us know about your experience.

Twitter Roundup for September

Here are some FormIt highlights from Twitter during September. Remember, you can always follow us @FormIt3D!

3D Sketching on the iPad with FormIt

Now for the iPad version of this new version FormIt. This version is packed with new features and some major changes! For instance, new axis snaps for X, Y, and Z! This removes the need to pre-define a work-plane when sketching and allows for much more freedom in creating shapes. My personal favorite however is the ability to “pause” a sketch without losing the linework. I can then edit the unattached endpoint of a line and then start sketching again until I have my closed shape or surface. I could keep going but if a picture is worth 1000 words, a video is worth, well, a lot more! Check out the new video:
